In my last post, I explained the truth about high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Today I want to talk about what happens when some kids ingest HFCS.
I have personal experience with this one. In fact, this issue started me on my path of learning everything I can about nutrition. In my book, Processed Kids, I give you all the knowledge I have gained in the past 7 years about what is in our foods and how to keep your kids healthy in our processed world. The book is basically a synopsis of the wealth of nutrition information out there in an easy to read format for busy moms. There are dozens of healthy recipes that can be made in under 30 minutes too.
My son, now almost 7, exhibited extreme behavior and mood swings when he was little. Fortunately I knew a little about food allergies and knew he was showing symptoms of one - breakouts and scaly skin on the face - but didn't realize that his behavior was related. We went through a year of trial and error and still couldn't determine the cause.
One day I was looking on the internet and came across an article on HFCS and behavior problems in children. BINGO! I read as this article perfectly described my child. I took him totally off HFCS and within days, he changed from a mean, agressive, angry little boy to the sweet natured child I knew he was. I couldn't believe it.
Don't just believe me. Search the internet. I just did a search for "high fructose corn syrup and behavior problems in children" and netted almost 28,000 hits.
I hope this helps you. It was an article just like this that changed my life and my sons. I know it's hard to believe if you don't see it every day, but it's true, this stuff is bad - really bad.
I think of myself as lucky. Yes, I had to endure a year of horrible behavior, but now we eat so much more healthy because of it. We just can't eat processed foods and junk foods because high fructose corn syrup is in so many of these foods. What I worry about is those of you that can't see it and therefore do nothing about it. This ingredient has no business in our children's diets. Please, even if you don't see problems that I did, take HFCS out of your child's diet and see what happens. You'd be surprised.
If you have a story about this, please let me hear from you....
